Mattel honors mathematician Katherine Johnson for her contributions to space & aeronautics programs



Katherine Johnson an African American, mathematician for NASA is being honored with a Barbie. Her story along with Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson stories were shared in the 2016 biographical drama Hidden Figures. The film follows the trio who were often referred to as “computers” through the challenges they faced as the only African American women working for NASA during the 1958 Space Race.

The Katherine Johnson Barbie is apart of the Inspiring Women Barbie Collection, which pays homage to “incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules, and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before.

The campaign launched March 6.
